Ryan CraigManaging Director

Ryan Craig is a founding Managing Director of University Ventures. Prior to University Ventures, Ryan founded and built Wellspring, the largest and leading organization of treatment programs for overweight and obese children, adolescents and young adults, including boarding schools, summer camps and after-school programs. Ryan headed the Education & Training sector at Warburg Pincus from 2001 – 2004 where he was the founding Director of Bridgepoint Education (NYSE: BPI), one of the largest online universities in the U.S. Ryan has advised the U.S. Department of Education and served as VP Strategic Development for Fathom, the Columbia University online education company, from 1999 - 2001. Ryan began his career as a consultant with McKinsey & Co. He received bachelor's degrees in Literature and Economics summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Yale University, and his law degree from the Yale Law School. Ryan is a member of the Board of Directors of Claremont Lincoln University and is on the Advisory Board of UCLA Extension.

David FiguliManaging Director

David Figuli is a founding Managing Director of University Ventures. Prior to University Ventures, David was a leading attorney and business development specialist in higher education. In his 30+ year career, he has represented over 300 institutions, including some of the largest proprietary schools, and multiple private equity investors in the post-secondary industry and has served as a member of the board of trustees of four universities. In addition to institutions and investors, David has consulted to the American Council on Education (ACE), the American Association of State Colleges and Universities AASCU), National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO), and countless other organizations. David has also published books and articles on higher education management issues and has presented hundreds of seminars for the leading post-secondary associations as well as major colleges and universities. Of particular note, he has represented seller or buyer in over half of all successful non-profit to for-profit conversions of colleges and universities. Prior to entering private practice, David served as General Counsel for the South Dakota University System and Chief Legal Counsel for the Montana University System. He also served as the General Counsel to Regis University, where he developed their licensing division which grew into 30+ partnerships with colleges and universities around the world.

Daniel PiankoManaging Director

Daniel Pianko is a founding Managing Director of University Ventures. Prior to University Ventures, Daniel was an investor in and advisor to education companies in their strategic and development initiatives. With over ten years of experience in the education industry, Daniel has built a reputation as a trusted advisor and educational entrepreneur who honors the traditions and values of higher education. Daniel began his career as an investment banking analyst at Goldman Sachs. At Goldman, Daniel advised on over a billion dollars of transactions including mergers and equity financings. He entered the education industry as Director of Strategy and Planning at LearnNow, a high growth charter school company that was acquired by Edison Schools.Since his initial work with charter schools, Daniel has served as the lead operating executive of a 1,200 student university with multiple campuses, on the board of one of the largest distributor of K-12 technology products and as the lead analyst of an education focused hedge fund. Currently, Daniel sits on the board of Altius Education Inc. Mr. Pianko is a frequent speaker at industry events and conventions and his article "Venture Capital: Looking Outside the Education Sector" was recently published as part of an American Enterprise Institute series by Harvard University Press. Mr. Pianko graduated magna cum laude from Columbia University and received a M.B.A. and M.A. in Education from Stanford University, where he chaired Stanford's Business of Education Conference.

Gregg RosenthalManaging Director

Gregg Rosenthal is a founding Managing Director of University Ventures. Prior to University Ventures, Gregg was Vice President of Corporate Development at Bertelsmann SE & Co. KGaA (>$20b in revenues, >100,000 employees across 60+ countries). Gregg created and led the group's education services strategy, building a strong network among the sector's leading firms, entrepreneurs and stakeholders.During his tenure at the company, Gregg participated in multiple education deals spanning numerous business segments and foreign markets targeting early-stage, growth and buy-out investments. He joined Bertelsmann AG as part of the Entrepreneurs Program (BEP), focusing exclusively on education as of 2009. Previously, Gregg was founder and CEO of Language Adventures Inc., a multi-national firm offering immersion language education to school and affinity groups. He began his career as an international Media executive holding corporate development and operational roles at KirchGruppe and Sony.He has an MBA from INSEAD, having previously studied at The Wharton School, NYU-Stern and The University of Texas at Austin. Gregg speaks English, German, Spanish, French and Japanese.

Tatiana GoldsteinChief Operating Officer

Tatiana Goldstein is the Chief Operating Officer of University Ventures. Prior to University Ventures, Tatiana worked with various companies providing strategic and financial advice in buy-side transactions and executing various merger and acquisition transactions. She also served as the Chief Financial Officer of Portview Communications Partners, a technology venture fund and as CFO of various operating companies. Previously, Tatiana was a Vice President at Greenbridge Capital Partners, where she executed technology and media transactions and was also a Vice President in the technology and media group at The Carlyle Group. Prior to Carlyle, Tatiana worked in the Media group of Lazard and as a C.P.A in the Entrepreneurial Services group of Arthur Andersen & Co. Tatiana has a B.S in Economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and speaks Russian and English.

Mac SteenrodSenior Associate

Mac Steenrod is a Senior Associate at University Ventures. He began his career in the investment banking divisions of Jefferies & Goldman Sachs, advising on over a billion dollars of transactions including mergers and equity financings in Technology, Media, and Telecom. Prior to University Ventures, Mac was a growth equity investor at JMI Equity, investing in software and technology-enabled services in North America, and a private equity investor at The Rohatyn Group (fka Citi Venture Capital International), investing in emerging markets globally as part of the Corridor Investments Team. He also served on the Board of Directors of IMP, a highly innovative mentorship program dedicated to enhancing high school and college graduation rates for at-risk youth in urban centers. Mac is especially passionate about the use of innovative technologies and business models to address the pain points in higher education in an increasingly dynamic and globalized economy. Mr. Steenrod studied at Hong Kong University of Science & Technology and Boston College, where he graduated Alpha Sigma Nu and earned the Dean’s Letter of Commendation. Mac received a M.B.A. from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where he judged the Wharton Private Equity competition and led outdoor, experiential-learning expeditions as a Leadership Venture Fellow.

Aanand RadiaSenior Associate

Aanand Radia is a Senior Associate at University Ventures. Prior to University Ventures, Aanand was a private equity investor at BlackRock, the world’s largest asset manager, where he focused on Financial Services and Special Situations. Prior to BlackRock, Aanand worked at EdisonLearning (formerly Edison Schools), an early pioneer in the charter school movement and later a diversified K-12 education technology and services company, where he focused on corporate strategy, business development, new product and finance initiatives. While at Edison, Aanand helped to develop an alternative education product offering delivered through a hybrid/blended learning environment. Aanand started his career at Patriot Capital, a middle market private equity firm, where he made investments across a broad range of industries. Aanand received his B.S. in Economics from Carnegie Mellon University.

Ankit DhirAssociate

Ankit Dhir is an Associate at University Ventures. Ankit began his career in the restructuring group of Houlihan Lokey where he served as a debtor and creditor-side advisor on various multi-billion dollar in and out-of-court restructurings. Prior to University Ventures, he led the business development and strategy efforts at SONGS Music Publishing, a leading independent music publisher, where he focused on corporate strategy, new media strategy, and new content acquisition including the acquisitions of Lorde and The Weeknd. Ankit attended the University of Pennsylvania where he received a B.S. in Economics from the Wharton School and a B.A. in Political Science from the College of Arts and Sciences.

Satish Menon, Ph.D.CTO/CPO

Dr. Satish Menon is Chief Technology Officer at University Ventures. Prior to University Ventures, Satish was CTO of Apollo Group where he built and launched cloud-based and data-driven adaptive learning platforms. Satish is a technologist, product visionary and entrepreneur, with broad experience in education, media, computing, and big-data. He has a reputation as a system thinker, problem solver with a high degree of business acumen. Prior to Apollo Group, Satish was Vice President of Consumer Platforms at Yahoo and Chief Architect for Yahoo Media (with responsibility for Yahoo’s consumer sites such as Yahoo!News, sports, finance, etc.). He started his career at AT&T Bell Labs and held executive roles at SGI and Kasenna (spin-off of SGI’s broadband media division, co-founded by Satish). He holds a PhD in computer science from Georgia Tech.

Marissa StrongOffice Manager

Marissa Strong is the Office Manager at University Ventures. Marissa has been working as an administrator in the non-profit and education sector, managing student and training programs as well as local and national events for almost a decade. Marissa has a B.A. in Applied Psychology and Human Relations from Pace University where she graduated cum laude, and will receive her M.Ed. in Higher Education Administration from CUNY Baruch College in December 2014.
